15th Anniversary Brixton Academy pt6 – 2004

2004 saw my switch over from negative to digital, with my trusty old Canon EOS 5 working alongside my shiny new Canon EOS 20D both capturing some stunning performances at London’s Brixton Academy (and still many great acts at Shepherds Bush Empire and other London venues)

Highlights from this year at Brixton were Kraftwerk, The Pixies, PJ Harvey, Stray Cats, Ian Brown, Scissor Sisters (Halloween party!) Nick Cave, Snow Patrol, Faithless, Groove Armada and Kings of Leon.

Thank you all for your warm responses to my retrospective blog posts over the past few days, and for your votes for today’s photos. As requested, here are your selection from 2004.

The 3rd April 2013 will mark my 15th year as house photographer at London’s iconic O2 Academy Brixton.

Echo and the Bunnymen played that night, I remember the stage and pit feeling enormous after I’d spent a year and a half as house photographer at the Shepherds Bush Empire and I am thrilled to still be working at both venues to this day.

It has been difficult choosing from the 659 shows I’ve photographed at Brixton Academy over the past 15 years, but I will be posting a selection of photos from each anniversary year over the coming days.

Missed quite a few shows at the end of the summer and through autumn as I went down with a bout of pneumonia.

Happy to report am now on the mend and back in the pit and as soon as the lights go down, the adrenaline soon takes over the near constant exhaustion I feel most of the day.

Crystal Castles performance was unusual as we are usually only permitted to shoot the 1st 3 songs from the pit, no flash.  This show we were to shoot from the side of the stage with flash, the crowd went ‘Whoooh’ as they saw some silhouetted figures walk on stage and it gave us photographers a chance to experience what it feels like to be famous.
